How To Stay Warm In A Hammock: A Maker's Cold-Weather Sleep System That Actually Works

The first cold night in a hammock breaks most people. Somewhere around 2 a.m., a person who was perfectly warm in a sleeping bag on the ground the night before wakes up shivering with a specific kind of cold they've never felt before. It's not the air temperature that's changed — it's what's happening underneath them.

Cold Butt Syndrome is real, and it's the #1 reason people give up on hammock camping. But once you understand what's actually happening, it's completely solvable — and a properly built hammock sleep system will keep you warmer, more comfortable, and drier than the equivalent ground setup. This is the honest playbook for staying warm in a hammock, from summer nights that unexpectedly drop into the 40s all the way down to sub-freezing winter trips.

Why a hammock feels colder than the ground (the physics)

When you sleep on the ground, your sleeping bag's insulation compresses under your body but the ground itself is a relatively poor thermal conductor. A sleeping pad's R-value covers the rest of the equation and you're comfortable.

When you sleep in a hammock, three things change simultaneously:

  1. Your sleeping bag's bottom insulation crushes to zero. Loft is what traps warm air. Body weight compresses down, synthetic fill, and every other insulation to a paper-thin layer with almost no R-value.
  2. The single layer of fabric under you conducts heat directly into moving air. A hammock's bottom isn't just non-insulating — it's actively cooling. Ambient air circulates freely beneath the fabric, and heat leaves your body as fast as you can produce it.
  3. You lose heat over your entire back surface simultaneously. On the ground, only ~30% of your body is touching the cold zone at any moment (the parts pressed into the pad). In a hammock, your entire back, shoulders, hips, and thighs are exposed to that cooled fabric all at once.

The net effect: a sleeping bag rated to 20°F on the ground will feel like about 45°F in a hammock. That's not the bag's fault. That's physics.

The fix is either insulation UNDER the hammock (an underquilt), insulation INSIDE the hammock between you and the fabric (a sleeping pad), or both. Which one you pick depends on how cold you're going, what the weather's doing, and how much weight you'll carry.

The two insulation systems, honestly compared

There are a lot of hammock insulation blog posts online that pretend underquilts and pads are interchangeable. They're not. Each has real advantages and real downsides. We'd rather you buy the right one than the wrong one.

How it works: A regular inflatable or foam pad goes INSIDE the hammock, between you and the bottom fabric.

Pros: - Dual-use. The same pad works for hammock and ground shelter — huge win if you sometimes cowboy-camp or share a tent. - Cheapest entry point. If you already own a pad rated to 4+ R-value, you're set. - No adjustment mid-night. A pad doesn't shift like an underquilt can — you're always on it. - Wet-weather friendly. If your underquilt gets soaked, it's compromised. Pads shrug off moisture.

Cons: - Shifts under you when you turn. Even a 25"-wide pad slides sideways in a hammock if you're a restless sleeper. Some pad pockets (like the one built into our V.3) fix this. Cheaper hammocks don't have one. - Wraps around your body coldly. Because the hammock cocoons you, the pad flattens against your torso but the fabric still wraps around your sides, exposing shoulders and hips to cold fabric that the pad can't reach. - Squeaky and loud. Some inflatable pads sound like a crinkling grocery bag when you shift. Not everyone cares. Some do. - R-value drops when compressed. Manufacturer R-values are tested on flat ground. In a hammock, the pad compresses more from your body weight and gets pushed into the concave curve of the fabric — real-world warmth is typically 15-20% lower than the box rating.

Best for: Summer through shoulder season (down to ~45°F), dual-use campers, budget-conscious buyers, and anyone who wants one sleep system for both hammock and ground.

Underquilt hung below the hammock

How it works: An underquilt is essentially a sleeping bag that hangs on the OUTSIDE of the hammock, cinched via shock cord and toggles to the outside bottom. Your body weight doesn't compress it because it's not under you — it's supporting you from below.

Pros: - Warmest available option for hammock sleep. A quality underquilt keeps its full loft and traps a bubble of warm air under the entire hammock body. - Full-body coverage. Because it wraps around the shape of the hammock, it insulates shoulders, hips, and calves — not just the middle of your back. - No pressure points. Nothing compressing your body. You feel like you're floating in warmth. - Silent. No crinkling.

Cons: - Hammock-only. An underquilt is dead weight on the ground. If you sometimes ground-camp, you'll want a pad backup regardless. - Higher upfront cost. Quality underquilts run $200-450. Cheap ones (~$80) leak heat through cold spots and aren't worth it. - Requires proper adjustment. If it's not cinched snug against the hammock bottom, cold air pockets form between the underquilt and the fabric. Learning the right tension takes 2-3 trips. - Wet-weather vulnerability. If your fly leaks or condensation soaks the underquilt, its insulation drops fast. Store it in a dry bag when not deployed.

Best for: Anyone doing 3+ hammock nights per year in temperatures below 50°F. The performance-to-comfort gain over a pad is significant.

The "minimum viable" column is what will keep you technically alive and not injured. The "comfort" column is what you actually want if you're planning to sleep well.

Real-world truth we don't see in most blog posts: most first-time cold-weather hammock campers underestimate by one full row. If the forecast says 40°F, bring insulation for 32°F. Ground crews get away with underinsulating because their pad + bag work as a system. Hammock crews don't.

The pieces most guides skip

The overquilt (top insulation) matters as much as bottom

Everyone talks about underquilts. Almost no one talks about the top of your sleep system.

If you're using a regular sleeping bag in a hammock, the compressed bottom half is doing nothing for you (see: physics section). All your top-side warmth is coming from the un-compressed top half — the same as a quilt would provide.

Two options: - Regular sleeping bag — works, but you're carrying wasted insulation weight in the bottom half. - Dedicated overquilt — a rectangular top-insulation piece with no zipper. Lighter, packs smaller, works perfectly with an underquilt below. Weight savings for the same warmth: 30-40%.

Wind is the silent killer

A 5-mph breeze at 45°F feels like 35°F under a hammock. A 15-mph breeze can drop the effective temp another 10°F. Ground campers rarely notice because they're pressed into a shelter. Hammock campers get windflow across every exposed surface.

The fixes: - Pitch behind a natural wind block. Stand of trees, boulder, ridge line. Not perpendicular to the wind — parallel to it. - Pitch your fly LOW on the windward side. A tarp pitched high looks nice on Instagram; a tarp pitched low against wind actually protects. Wind slides off a diagonal, deflects off perpendicular. - Add a groundsheet under the hammock. Cuts about half the wind-driven air movement below the underquilt. Cheap fix, big warmth gain.

Base layers matter more than you think

Sleeping in the same base layer you hiked in is a rookie mistake. Your day-layer is loaded with moisture (sweat, humidity from the environment) even if it feels dry to the touch. Moisture in your base layer at 3 a.m. equals a 5-10°F effective temp drop.

The habit that transforms cold-night hammock camping: - Change into a dry, clean base layer before you get in the hammock. Merino wool base layer top + bottom. Wool socks. Fleece beanie. - Stow the day-layer in a dry bag at the bottom of the hammock or in your pack — not next to you where its moisture can transfer. - Warm up BEFORE you get in. Do jumping jacks, brisk walk, cook a hot meal. You want to enter the hammock already warm. A hammock can maintain your heat; it cannot generate heat you don't bring in.

The neck and ear gap

The most common heat-loss spot in a properly-set-up hammock is the neck-to-hood transition. A regular sleeping bag hood pulls up over your head; in a hammock, when you settle into the slight cocoon, the hood often ends up displaced against the fabric with your head/neck exposed to circulating cold air.

Fix: sleep in a fleece beanie. Not a light merino cap — a full fleece beanie. Cover your ears. This one accessory has kept more first-time cold-weather hammock campers warm than any other single upgrade we could recommend. Under $15 at any outdoor shop.

Common mistakes that cost warmth

  • Assuming a good sleeping bag is enough. It's not. Every hammock camper learns this once.
  • Cheap underquilts. A $60 underquilt has cold spots because the fill migrates. If you can't afford a $200+ underquilt, use a pad and save up.
  • Underquilt cinched too loose. Air gap between the underquilt and hammock = cold spot. The underquilt must be pulled snug against the hammock's outer bottom fabric on all sides.
  • Skipping the pad pocket. If your hammock has one and you're pad-camping, USE it. If your hammock doesn't have one, put a strip of grip tape on the pad's bottom side or a friction sleeve to keep it in place.
  • Fly pitched too high in cold weather. Wind sneaks under. Lower the fly, tighten the guy-outs, and pitch it to shed cold air.
  • Getting into the hammock cold. A hammock cannot warm you up — it only preserves what you bring. Warm up first.
  • Sleeping in wet base layers. Moisture = heat loss. Change into dry layers before sleep, always.
  • No neck coverage. Fleece beanie. Every cold trip.

  6. Dry-bag change of clothes: merino base layer top + bottom, wool socks, fleece beanie
  7. Groundsheet (a cheap $10 Tyvek square) to block wind under the hammock
  8. Hot water bottle for sub-freezing (heat 1L in your pot before bed, put in the foot of your quilt — game-changing)

The bottom line

Staying warm in a hammock isn't harder than staying warm on the ground — it just uses a different system. Your bag alone won't do it. Your pad alone won't do it below ~45°F.
