Most hammock campers quit their first winter trip somewhere between 2 AM and dawn. It's not because the hammock failed. It's because they treated winter like a summer trip with more layers. Winter hammock camping is a systems problem — bottom insulation, wind exposure, site selection, and sleep clothing all have to line up, or one weak link puts you on the ground shivering by 3 AM. We build all-season hammock tents, we've tested every one of our components down to -10°F, and we get support emails from customers doing this wrong every October. This is the playbook we'd hand a friend who's asking us how to set up for winter: what actually matters, what's optional, and what the real trade-offs look like at each temperature band.

The Physics Problem: Why Winter Hammocking Is Different
If you're new to this: sleeping in a hammock has one hard advantage over the ground (no rocks, no roots, no puddling water) and one hard disadvantage — every inch of your body that touches the fabric is losing heat to air moving underneath you. It's called Convective Bottom Shock, or CBS if you read hammock forums. In a tent, your sleeping pad only needs to insulate against still ground. In a hammock, it needs to insulate against a moving air layer that will strip heat faster than a wind chill number suggests.
The practical effect: a sleeping pad rated to 20°F on the ground might feel like 40°F in a hammock. This is why nearly every experienced winter hammocker adds an underquilt below their hammock, and why we designed the V.3 with a fitted pad pocket rather than expecting you to fight a loose pad all night.
The Insulation Stack (In Priority Order)
Winter hammock warmth is a bottom-up problem before it's a top-down one. Prioritize your gear budget in this order:
1. Underquilt (highest ROI). A good underquilt below the hammock is the single largest warmth improvement you can make. It hangs snug against the outside of the hammock body, eliminating the moving-air layer. Our ThermoNest Cold-Weather Underquilt is rated to about 15°F comfort in still conditions.
2. Sleeping pad in the built-in pocket. If you're camping between 40°F and 55°F and don't want to buy an underquilt yet, our built-in pad pocket on the V.3 hammock tent body accepts pads up to 78" long × 28" wide × 3" thick. Our own Ultralight Inflatable Sleeping Pad is R-4.0 and fits perfectly. Below 40°F, treat the pad as a supplement to an underquilt, not a replacement.
3. Top quilt or sleeping bag. Yes, above the body matters too — but not as much as most beginners think. Your body's heat loss through the top is way slower than through the bottom because your bag or top quilt is trapped by the hammock walls, and you don't get the same convective effect. A 20°F-rated sleeping bag is usually enough down to 15-20°F when your bottom insulation is dialed.
4. Sleep clothing. Merino base layer + a light insulated mid + wool cap + dry sock change before you get in. If you sweat during hiking and don't change out, you're going to have a bad night — moisture is the enemy at cold temps.
Underquilt: Why It's Non-Negotiable Below 40°F
We get this question every October: "Can I just use a warmer sleeping bag instead of an underquilt?" You can try. You'll be cold. Here's why.
Your sleeping bag insulation only works when the down or synthetic can loft up. When you lie on top of your bag inside a hammock, your body weight crushes the insulation between you and the hammock fabric to essentially zero thickness. Zero loft = zero R-value = you're losing heat directly through a single layer of hammock fabric into moving air.
An underquilt sits below the hammock fabric, so it stays lofted at full thickness. That's the whole game.

The Rain Fly Question: Full-Coverage or Asymmetric?
Winter rain flies do three things summer flies don't: (1) block wind on the sides, (2) trap a thin layer of dead air that raises your effective temperature, and (3) hold snow load without collapsing.

Pitching notes for winter: pitch the fly tighter and lower than you would in summer. A taut fly doesn't flap in wind (flapping fabric is a heat drain), and a lower pitch reduces the interior volume the trapped air layer has to warm. Steep sides also shed snow load rather than sagging.
Site Selection: Where To Hang In Winter
You can execute the perfect gear stack and still freeze if you hang in the wrong spot. Winter site selection has different rules than summer:
- Get out of the wind. Not just below a ridge — behind a physical windbreak (dense evergreens, a rock face, a berm). Wind cuts through insulation exponentially with speed. A 10 mph wind can drop effective temperature by 15-20°F.
- Look for evergreen cover, not deciduous. Bare deciduous trees provide almost zero radiant heat retention. Spruce, hemlock, or dense pine canopy retains heat below it and blocks wind aloft.
- Skip the valley floor. Cold air pools in low spots. If you're camping at 4,000 ft in a bowl, the valley floor might be 15°F colder than the ridge above. Camp mid-slope where you can.
- Face the fly opening away from the prevailing wind. Sounds obvious. Half the field-tested cold-night stories we hear come from people who set up in a lull and got a 3 AM wind shift they couldn't react to.
- Check tree health before you hang. Winter kills weak branches. A "widow-maker" that would sway harmlessly in summer can crack under snow load overnight. Look up before you clip in.
Straps, Suspension, and Cold-Weather Failure Modes
Cold weather does things to gear that summer doesn't. Two failure modes to know:
Frozen straps and suspension: Wet nylon that freezes overnight is stiff and hard to work with in the morning. It also loses some tensile flex. Store your straps folded (not bunched) inside your dry sack overnight if freezing rain is expected — a compact fold flexes back to normal faster than a knotted heap. Cold buckles and clips. Metal parts get brittle at 0°F and lower. If you're camping below zero, warm carabiners and buckles in your gloves before applying full load — plastic-composite hardware is safer at extreme cold.
Hang angle: the standard 30-degree hang angle applies in winter too. Don't over-tighten to try to reduce sag; a too-taut hammock exaggerates pressure points, and pressure points in winter mean cold spots.
Sleep Clothing System (What Goes On Your Body)
We could write a whole post on this, but the essentials:
- Base layer: merino wool, not synthetic. Synthetic gets clammy from body moisture and holds cold against your skin. Merino wicks + insulates when damp.
- Mid-layer: light down puffy or a synthetic like PrimaLoft. This goes ON before you get in the hammock and stays on all night.
- Bottom: wool long johns.
- Head: wool cap or balaclava. You lose a disproportionate amount of heat through your head because the sleeping bag hood collapses when your head touches the hammock fabric.
- Feet: dry wool socks — a FRESH pair. The socks you hiked in are damp and will cost you 5-8°F of warmth all night.
- Hands: thin liner gloves inside the bag. Cold hands wake you up.
The kit dressing change is non-negotiable. Do it in daylight before the temperature drops. Trying to change layers at 2 AM in a hammock is misery you can just avoid.

Winter trips are unforgiving. Before you take this setup to a remote spot in January, do these:
- Backyard shakedown at 30-40°F. One night out, close to home, so you can bail if something's wrong.
- Layer test. Practice getting in and out of the hammock fully dressed, in the dark, with gloves on. It's harder than it sounds.

- Weigh your actual kit. Trail weight assumptions are usually off by 1-2 lbs once you add water, snacks, and small extras.
