Ask any hammock camper what ruined their last summer trip, and the answer is almost never rain. It's mosquitoes. A leaking rain fly is a comfort problem. A swarm of mosquitoes at dusk is a "pack up at 2 AM and drive home" problem.
We design and build hammock tents for a living, which means we've watched a lot of customers come back from June-July trips with the same exact complaint: the bugs got in. Not because their gear failed — because they didn't have a real plan. They had a hammock with a bug net and assumed that was enough. It isn't.
This guide lays out the actual 8-layer defense we use ourselves, in order from "do this first" to "nice-to-have." No fluff, no affiliate-link-spamming. Just specifics: which fabric mesh size keeps no-see-ums out, why Permethrin is non-negotiable in tick country, and the one site-selection mistake that costs people more sleep than any other.

Why mosquitoes are a worse problem in hammocks than tents
Ground tents have a floor. That floor is also a mosquito barrier. As soon as you zip the door, you're inside a sealed box.
Hammocks aren't sealed. Even a hammock with a built-in bug net has more surface area for mosquitoes to probe — the entire underside, the suspension points where the net meets the hammock body, the rain fly seams, and (the big one) the entry zipper. A 0.5 mm gap at the zipper is a four-lane highway for a hungry mosquito.
The other issue is biology. Hammocks hang you in the open air at roughly chest height, which is exactly where most mosquito species hunt — the warm, CO₂-rich exhalation zone between knee height and head height. Ground tents at least keep you closer to cooler ground air, which suppresses activity slightly.
This isn't a reason not to hammock camp. It just means you have to think about mosquitoes a layer deeper than tent campers do.
Layer 1: Pick the right site (free, biggest impact)
This single decision matters more than the next seven combined. Mosquitoes don't fly far — most species stay within 1-3 km of where they hatched, and they cluster near specific micro-conditions.
Avoid: - Within 100 m of standing water (ponds, marshes, slow streams, even big puddles) - Dense canopy where airflow drops below 3-4 km/h - Low spots that collect cool air at night (mosquitoes prefer the warm, still pocket) - Game trails — animals (and their CO₂) attract bugs to the area - Anywhere with a noticeable dawn or dusk swarm — they'll be back tonight
Pick instead: - Ridges, knolls, or any spot with even a 5-10 km/h breeze - 50-100 m from a campfire pit (smoke is the original mosquito repellent) - South-facing sites in temperate forests (drier, more sun, less mosquito habitat) - Higher elevation when you have a choice (mosquito density drops fast above 1,500 m) - Sandy or rocky ground — fewer breeding pools nearby
The breeze rule is the one most beginners get wrong. They look for "sheltered" sites because they're worried about wind on the rain fly. A 5-10 km/h breeze grounds most mosquitoes (they can't fly well in it) and clears the CO₂ plume around your hammock so they can't find you. Slight wind exposure is good.
Layer 2: Hammock with a proper integrated bug net
The bug net is your last line of defense, not your first — but it has to actually work. Three things matter:
Mesh size. "No-see-um" mesh (NSU) is the only spec that stops everything in North America. The cutoff is usually 1.0 mm openings or smaller, with ~600 holes per square inch. Standard "mosquito mesh" has openings around 1.5 mm, which is fine for mosquitoes but ineffective against biting midges (no-see-ums), black flies, and ceratopogonids — exactly the bugs that ruin trips in the Boundary Waters, Eastern Canada, and Florida. If a hammock tent's spec sheet doesn't explicitly say "no-see-um mesh," assume it doesn't have it.
Coverage. The net needs to fully enclose the hammock body without gaps where the net meets the suspension. Continuous, sewn-in nets beat detachable nets here every time — there's no zipper gap, no Velcro creep, and the net hangs taut instead of sagging onto your face.
Entry zipper quality. A YKK #5 zipper with a flap behind it is the baseline. Anything less will gap under load, especially when you're rolling around in your sleep.
Maker note: The Hawk Nest V.3 uses a full no-see-um mesh integrated net with a single-side YKK #8 entry zipper and an internal storm flap. We went with single-side entry on purpose — every double-side-entry hammock we tested in development had at least one zipper that misaligned under torsion. Fewer zippers = fewer failure points.

Layer 3: Treat your gear with Permethrin
This is the single highest-ROI thing you can do, and most people skip it because it sounds chemical-scary. It isn't.
Permethrin is a synthetic version of a compound found in chrysanthemum flowers. It bonds to fabric (not your skin), kills insects on contact, and stays effective through about 6 wash cycles or 6 weeks of UV exposure. It's not a repellent — it's a contact killer. A mosquito that lands on a treated rain fly walks 10-30 cm and falls off dead.
What to treat: - The exterior of your rain fly (most important) - The mesh side of your bug net (yes, you can treat mesh — it doesn't damage no-see-um material) - Your sleeping bag stuff sack, dry bag exteriors, and outer pants/long sleeves - Tree straps and ridgeline (mosquitoes do rest on these between feeds)
What NOT to treat: - Anything that contacts food - The inside of your sleeping bag or any layer that contacts skin for hours - Down insulation (some research suggests it can break down the loft over many treatments) - Anything you'll be near a cat for in the first 24 hours after treatment (Permethrin is toxic to cats until it fully dries — fine after)
A single 12 oz bottle of Sawyer Permethrin (about $20 USD) treats a full setup — hammock tent, fly, clothes, pack — and lasts a full season. For tick country (which is now most of Eastern Canada and the US Eastern Seaboard), this is mandatory, not optional.
Layer 4: Active repellent on exposed skin
When you're outside the hammock — cooking, fetching water, sitting by the fire — your skin matters. DEET and Picaridin are the two CDC-recommended options:
- DEET 30-40% — gold standard, works on everything, lasts 6-8 hours. Damages plastics and synthetic fabrics on direct contact. Use the lower concentration unless you're in extreme bug pressure — there's diminishing return above 40%.
- Picaridin 20% — nearly as effective for shorter trips, doesn't damage gear, doesn't have the DEET smell. Better for sensitive skin and long backcountry stints.
Skip "natural" oil-based repellents (citronella, lemongrass, eucalyptus). Lab studies put their effective protection at around 30-60 minutes vs. 6-8 hours for synthetics. Fine for a backyard BBQ. Not fine when you're three days from a trailhead.
Layer 5: Smoke + light discipline at camp
Mosquitoes hunt by CO₂, body heat, and (for a few species) vision. You can interfere with all three at camp:
- Build a small fire when conditions allow — smoke is genuinely the oldest mosquito deterrent and it works, especially with a small handful of green pine needles thrown on for a thicker plume. Watch your downwind side.
- Cook upwind of your hammock — cooking smoke disperses you and your CO₂ output across a wider zone, which makes you harder to locate.
- Headlamp red mode only at dusk — white light at dusk attracts every flying insect in 50 m. Red mode preserves night vision and is invisible to most insects.
- Don't open your bug net during peak feed time — that's the 30-90 minutes around dawn and dusk. If you have to get up, do it midday or full dark.
Layer 6: Rain fly geometry that creates a buffer zone
This one's underrated. A rain fly that hangs in tight to the hammock leaves zero buffer between you and the air outside the net. A wider, longer rain fly creates a "porch" of still air around the hammock, which makes it noticeably harder for mosquitoes to access the bug net surface and start probing.

Layer 7: Strap selection (yes, really)
Mosquitoes rest on warm, sheltered surfaces between feeds. Your tree straps — warmed by sun, sheltered from wind, often dark-colored — are exactly that surface. We've inspected straps after a buggy night and found dozens of mosquitoes hiding in the webbing loops.
A few practical fixes: - Use lighter-colored straps when given the choice (mosquitoes prefer dark surfaces) - Treat your tree straps with Permethrin along with the rest of your gear - After packing, shake your straps out before putting them in the stuff sack — you don't want to bring a dozen live mosquitoes into your pack
Our Adjustable Tree Straps are coyote brown by default, which sits in the middle of the dark/light spectrum. Treated with Permethrin, they kill any mosquito that lands on them.
Layer 8: Underquilt or pad protection from below
A hammock with a bug net protects the top and sides. It doesn't protect the bottom. Mosquitoes can — and will — bite through a single layer of thin nylon if you're pressed against it.
The fix isn't complicated: any insulation layer between you and the hammock body adds a physical barrier. Both options work:
- Underquilt (hangs outside the hammock body): a 3-season underquilt at 25-50°F also adds 2-3 cm of dead-air space and dense down/synthetic fill between you and the nylon. Effectively bite-proof.
- Sleeping pad inside the hammock (or in a built-in pad pocket): an inflatable pad has thicker plastic membranes than a typical nylon hammock body, plus the air gap. Also bite-proof, and doubles as your ground sleeping pad for when you're tent-curious.

The "mosquito night" checklist
If you know you're heading into bug-heavy territory, run this checklist before the trip:
- Treat your hammock tent rain fly, bug net, tree straps, and outer clothing with Permethrin at least 24 hours before departure so it fully dries and bonds.
- Pack 30% DEET or 20% Picaridin for skin (small 2 oz bottles are plenty for 3-5 days).
- Bring a head net for in-camp use during the dusk feed window — even a $5 mesh head net is faster than constantly slapping.
- Carry one set of clean long-sleeve and long-pants base layers reserved for evenings (you can shed buggy outer layers when you get in the hammock).
- Plan your camp arrival for midday — set up before the dusk swarm starts. Trying to pitch a hammock and bug net in the dark with mosquitoes biting your hands is one of the worst camp tasks in the woods.
What we don't bother with
To save you the research:
- Thermacell devices — they work in still air but get blown around by even light breeze, and they're heavy enough (200-300 g) that they're not worth packing for any trip more than overnight. Good for car-camping, not backpacking.
- Citronella candles — protect a ~1 m bubble. Useful only if you're sitting still inside that bubble.
- Ultrasonic mosquito repellers — multiple peer-reviewed studies show they don't work. Save the pack weight.
- Bug zappers — kill mostly harmless insects, not mosquitoes. Mosquitoes aren't attracted to UV.
- Vitamin B-1 / garlic / Listerine — folk remedies. No clinical evidence. Some people swear by them, but you can't bet a backcountry night on them.
Final note from the workshop
We design hammock tents because we use them — and the V.3 went through several mesh and zipper iterations specifically because of feedback from buggy-region customers. The current generation has no-see-um mesh, a single YKK #8 entry zipper with an internal storm flap, and a rain-fly geometry that creates the buffer zone described above. Combined with Permethrin treatment and a real site-selection habit, it's the same setup we sleep in ourselves in northern Ontario in July, which is about as worst-case as it gets in North America.
