Hammock Camping the Appalachian Trail: A Practical Setup Guide for Thru-Hikers

There's a long-running debate in the AT thru-hiking community about whether a hammock makes sense on a 2,194-mile footpath that crosses 14 states, 8 national forests, and roughly 165,000 feet of elevation gain. The short answer: for most of the trail, a properly built hammock setup beats a tent on comfort, beats a tarp-bivy on weather protection, and matches both on weight if you pick your components carefully. The long answer is what this guide is about.

We make hammock tents for a living, so this isn't going to be a "both have pros and cons, you decide" piece. We have specific opinions about what works on the AT and what fails by mile 800. Let's get into it.

Why a Hammock Beats a Tent on the AT (Most of the Time)

The Appalachian Trail is the single best long-distance trail in North America for hammock camping, and it's not particularly close. Here's why, with specifics:

Tree density is essentially 100% south of Maine. Through Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, you will not encounter a 100-meter stretch without two strong hardwoods spaced 12 to 15 feet apart. That covers about 1,900 of the 2,194 miles. Treeline only becomes a real consideration in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the alpine zones of Maine's Mahoosuc and Bigelow ranges.

The terrain is brutal for ground sleeping. AT campsites are notoriously sloped, rooty, rocky, and damp. Anyone who has spent a night at Tray Mountain Shelter, Newfound Gap, or any of the Smokies tent platforms knows what we're talking about. A hammock sidesteps all of it. You don't care if there's a 20-degree slope or a creek running under your sleeping area.

AT shelters fill up. The lean-tos on the AT are first-come, first-served, and from late March through June (the bubble) they're stuffed beyond capacity nightly. You're sleeping outside the shelter anyway. A hammock pitches faster than any tent and works in the awkward unused spaces around shelter sites that tenters can't use.

Weather management is just easier. Smoky Mountains thunderstorms, Pennsylvania downpours, Vermont mud season. A properly pitched hammock with a full-coverage rain fly stays dryer than most tents because you're elevated above the ground splash zone and your underside is protected by either a sleeping pad in the pocket or a quality underquilt.

The tent argument typically comes down to two scenarios where hammocks struggle: above-treeline alpine sections (Mt. Washington, Bigelow Range, Saddleback) and a few designated camping areas in the Smokies where you're required to use the shelters or tent pads. Both are solvable, and we'll get to them.

The Base AT Hammock System (And What You Can Skip)

A complete AT-ready hammock system has five components. Get these right and you're set for the whole trail. Get any of them wrong and you'll be replacing gear in Damascus.

1. The hammock body. Asymmetric-cut, gathered-end design, rated to your body weight plus 100 lbs minimum. The asymmetric cut is the non-negotiable feature, it's what gives you the diagonal lie that approximates flat sleeping. Cheap symmetric hammocks give you banana spine by mile 200.

2. Suspension. Two adjustable tree straps, daisy-chain loops, no ratchets. Skip the cheap webbing straps that bunch and slip, they will fail in the rain. The standard 10-foot strap covers 90% of AT tree spacings. If you want absolute flexibility, the 15-foot adjustable version handles wider gaps and uneven terrain.

3. Rain fly. Full-coverage, not a stuff-sack-sized tarp. The AT in summer is wet, period. You want a fly that drapes wide enough to keep you dry from rain blown sideways by wind. Hexagonal or asymmetric designs work, just verify it's rated for sustained downpours.

4. Bug protection. A bug net is mandatory from May through September on the AT. Mosquitoes, no-see-ums, and ticks are all aggressive between Damascus and Vermont. An integrated bug net (built into the hammock body) beats a separate sock for both weight and reliability.

5. Insulation system. This is the most debated component, and the one that separates pad-pocket setups from underquilt setups. We'll cover both. The right call depends on which sections of the AT you're hiking and the temperature range you expect.

That's it. Total weight target: 3.5 to 4.5 lbs all-in for the shelter system. Anything heavier and you're losing the weight advantage to a similarly featured ultralight tent. Anything lighter and you're sacrificing durability or weather protection.

AT Weight Targets — Where to Spend Grams and Where to Save Them

Thru-hikers obsess over weight, and rightfully so. Every ounce times 2.2 million steps adds up. Here's where we recommend spending weight and where to cut it on a hammock-based AT setup.

Spend weight on:

  • The bottom fabric. A waterproof bottom upgrade is worth its 4-6 oz penalty. It eliminates splash-up from puddles you pitch over, extends pad-pocket insulation efficiency, and doubles as your ground sheet when you pitch freestanding. This is the single best ounce-for-ounce upgrade for AT conditions.

  • Suspension straps. Cheap webbing that stretches in rain or slips on wet bark will ruin your night. The 2-3 oz penalty over budget cord is well-spent.

  • Bug protection density. A no-see-um-rated mesh (1500+ holes per square inch) is worth the slight weight bump over standard mosquito netting. AT no-see-ums laugh at standard mesh.

Save weight on:

  • The carrying bag. Most stock stuff sacks are over-engineered. A 2 oz silnylon sack works as well as the heavier branded options. Or skip the dedicated sack entirely and stuff the hammock loose into the bottom of your pack.

  • Stakes. A hammock setup needs four stakes maximum (two for fly corners, two for pulled-out fly sides). Use 6-inch titanium V-stakes at 0.4 oz each. Total stake weight under 2 oz.

  • The "extra" tarp. A lot of AT hikers carry a backup ground tarp. With a hammock, you don't need one. The fly serves as both shelter roof and emergency ground tarp if needed.

Realistic system weights for a complete AT hammock setup:

  • Ultralight build (high-end materials, no extras): 3.0 - 3.5 lbs
  • Standard durable build (what most thru-hikers actually carry): 3.8 - 4.5 lbs
  • Comfort-prioritized build (full underquilt + extra rain fly coverage): 5.0 - 5.5 lbs

For reference, a comparable ultralight backpacking tent (Big Agnes Tiger Wall, Zpacks Duplex) weighs 1.9 to 2.5 lbs. The hammock penalty is real but small, and the comfort difference on the AT specifically is enormous.

Pad Pocket vs Underquilt — The Real Decision

This is where most AT hammock advice gets vague. Here's a direct take:

Pad pocket setup wins for thru-hikes if you're starting in Georgia in March-April. A built-in pad pocket on the underside of the hammock sandwiches a sleeping pad directly beneath you, blocking the cold-air convection that makes regular hammocks chilly. The advantages on a thru-hike are pure logistics: the same pad you use under the hammock also works in the shelters on nights you choose to sleep in one, in stealth sites where you have to pitch freestanding on the ground, and as emergency sit-pad insulation at lunch breaks. One pad, three uses.

Underquilts win for section hikes or non-bubble timing. If you're hiking in mid-summer (June through August) when nighttime lows are reliably above 50°F, or if you're doing 1-2 week section hikes where pack weight matters more than gear versatility, an underquilt is a more thermally efficient solution. You'll sleep warmer at lower weight, but you give up the multi-use flexibility of a pad.

For most AT thru-hikers, the math favors the pad pocket setup. Here's the specific pad recommendation: any standard 20" or 25" wide, R-3.5+ inflatable pad. For shoulder-season starts (March, April, or fall southbound), bump to R-4.5+ and you're set down to about 25°F before you need additional insulation.

Pitching on the AT — Real-World Considerations

AT-specific pitching tips that apply nowhere else as strongly:

Trees come in pairs. The AT corridor is famously narrow and hiker-impacted, which means the campsite trees nearest the trail are often pre-flagged with bark damage from previous straps. Use the same trees, you're not introducing new damage. Set your straps higher than 6 feet to avoid eye-level webbing in heavily-camped areas.

Pitch with the prevailing wind. Appalachian thunderstorms typically blow in from the west or southwest. Pitch your fly's open ends running perpendicular to that, so wind-driven rain hits the closed ends, not the open ones. This single trick makes more difference than any expensive fly upgrade.

Lean-to interactions. AT shelters are basically three-walled lean-tos with an open front. You can pitch a hammock inside many of them, slinging between the side beams, when they're not full. Check the spacing first, most shelters are 8-10 feet wide, which is at the absolute minimum for a comfortable hammock pitch. Lean-tos at Stratton Mountain, Killington, and most shelters in Maine are wide enough. Smokies shelters are narrower and don't work.

Stealth sites. AT thru-hikers stealth-camp constantly. Hammock setups disappear visually because you're not on the ground breaking down a tent platform of vegetation. Leave No Trace impact is genuinely lower. Pick durable surfaces, hardwood forest understories work better than grassy meadows.

Above-treeline contingency. When the trail crosses Mt. Washington, Franconia Ridge, Saddleback, or the alpine zones of Maine, you can't hang. The fix: a hammock that also pitches freestanding as a ground tent. The same shelter you've been hanging in all summer converts to a low-profile ground shelter for those 3-5 nights of the trail. You don't need a second piece of gear.

Bugs, Bears, and Bigger Concerns

Three things test AT shelter systems more than weather: bugs, bears, and the cumulative effects of 5 months of nightly setup-teardown.

Bugs. As mentioned: no-see-um rated mesh. AT mosquito season runs roughly May through August depending on elevation. Pennsylvania and New Jersey are the worst stretches. A hammock with a built-in zippered bug net beats any tent-with-vestibule setup for ventilated bug protection, you're getting full airflow through the mesh while sealed off from above and below.

Bears. AT bears are conditioned to humans and food storage is mandatory for the entire trail. Hang your food in a bear bag or PCT-style with a bear-resistant container, never in your hammock. The hammock itself is not a bear concern, bears don't typically interact with hanging human shelters, they go for food.

Setup-teardown wear. 150+ nights of pitching and breaking down will destroy budget gear. Carabiners crack, fly seams fail, suspension webbing frays. The single most important durability upgrade is a quality rain fly with reinforced corner tie-outs. The savings from a budget fly disappear when you replace it in Pearisburg.

Section Hikes vs Thru-Hikes — Different Setup Calls

If you're doing a section hike (weekend, week, or 2-3 weeks) the calculus shifts:

  • Weight matters less because you're carrying for fewer days
  • Versatility matters more because you don't know exact conditions
  • Comfort matters more because you're not numbed to discomfort from cumulative miles

For section hikers, the comfort-prioritized build (underquilt + full coverage fly + waterproof bottom upgrade) is usually right. You're carrying it 60-100 miles, not 2,000.

For thru-hikers, the standard durable build is right. You'll be living with this gear from Georgia to Maine, and durability + simplicity beat marginal comfort gains.
