- Ultralight tarp only: 6-14 oz (Dyneema or cuben fiber, minimal tie-outs)

- Ultralight bug net: 4-8 oz (separate unit that clips over the body)
- Ultralight suspension (straps + hardware): 3-6 oz (Whoopie slings, Dyneema tree straps)
- Ultralight full system: 24-40 oz total, so 1.5-2.5 lb
Anything above 3 lb is a lightweight hammock tent, which is still great for the weight-conscious but not strictly ultralight.

What you sacrifice for ultralight
Every gram removed from a hammock system takes something with it. Here is the honest tradeoff table:
- Bug net: The fastest 4-8 oz you can save is deleting the integrated bug net. This works for shoulder-season nights above ~40°F when bugs are gone. For summer or subtropical trips, deleting the bug net is dumb.
- Rain fly size: Going from a 6-tie-out full-coverage fly to a 4-tie-out minimalist fly saves 4-8 oz. It also gives up ~30% of your weather protection in wind and side rain.
- Waterproof bottom fabric: Skipping the waterproof bottom saves 6-10 oz. On dry nights, you never notice. On wet nights or nights with heavy dew, you get a soggy hammock body by 4 a.m.
- Fabric denier: Going from 40D ripstop nylon to 30D silnylon saves 4-6 oz and cuts abrasion resistance by roughly half. Fine on a maintained trail, worse on off-trail bushwhacking.
- Suspension hardware: Steel hardware to titanium or Dyneema saves 3-5 oz and reduces max load rating. Fine for average hangers, worse if you camp with a lot of gear inside the hammock.
- Sleeping pad or underquilt: This is not really an ultralight sacrifice, it is a system tradeoff we cover further down.
The way the honest ultralight builds actually get to sub-3 lb is by taking three of these hits simultaneously. That's fine if you know what you are getting.
What current ultralight hammock tents actually weigh
Here are real trail weights from published specs and my own scale tests. Trail weight = hammock body + fly + bug net + suspension straps + carrying bag. Not "packed weight" which some brands quote to shave a few ounces.
- Warbonnet Superfly + Blackbird XLC (no top cover): 2 lb 14 oz. Sub-3 lb legit. Sacrifices: no integrated waterproof bottom, tarp is a separate item, no bug net without an add-on.
- Hummingbird Single + Tribe DCF fly: 1 lb 13 oz. Real ultralight but the DCF fly costs $500+ and the hammock body has zero abrasion resistance.
- DutchWare Chameleon + Winter Tarp: 2 lb 6 oz. Bug net is a zip-in add-on. Modular system that hits ultralight only with the lightest configuration.
- ENO SkyLoft: 3 lb 10 oz. Marketed as ultralight, but 3 lb 10 oz is lightweight, not ultralight.
- Kammok Roo Single: 2 lb 8 oz for the hammock alone, but zero shelter — needs a separate tarp. Full system is 4+ lb.
- Sea to Summit Pro: 3 lb 4 oz. Same as ENO, marketed as ultralight but sitting at the top of lightweight.
- Hawk Nest V.3 standard config: 3 lb (hammock body + integrated bug net + standard fly + straps). Right on the threshold. Not strictly ultralight by the sub-3 definition, but competitive against most so-called ultralight full systems that need add-ons to be functional.
- Hawk Nest V.3 all-weather config: 3 lb 12 oz with waterproof bottom fabric and ShelterPro full-coverage fly. Firmly in the lightweight category.
Buyer's honest takeaway: if you want strict sub-3 lb and integrated bug net + fly + waterproof bottom, no one currently makes it. You have to give up one of those three. If you want sub-3 lb with an integrated bug net and a real fly, our V.3 in the standard configuration ships at 3 lb even. That is close enough to ultralight for most trips, without needing to buy add-ons to get there.
Where the V.3 actually sits
I designed the V.3 with a philosophy that runs against strict ultralight orthodoxy: I would rather ship a full-featured 3 lb system that works right out of the pack than a 2 lb kit that needs $300 in add-ons to function on a real trip. So the standard V.3 configuration is:
- Hammock body: 40D ripstop nylon, integrated bug net (16 oz total). Not the lightest fabric, but rated for 500 lb capacity and abrasion-resistant for bushwhack use.
- Detachable rain fly: Symmetrical 6-tie-out coverage (14 oz). Not a minimalist tarp.
- Internal head-end spreader pole: Fiberglass segmented, 4 oz. Non-load-bearing, holds geometry so the bug net does not collapse on you.
- Adjustable Tree Straps: Polyester webbing with line-lockers (6 oz). Not Dyneema, but fine for standard 12-14 ft anchors.
- Stuff sack: 2 oz.
That comes to 3 lb 2 oz on my scale. Some rounding gets that to a marketed 3 lb standard trail weight.
Where you take on more weight for real function:
- Add the waterproof bottom fabric upgrade (+6 oz) and you have a real all-weather shelter that keeps you dry through dew and side rain.
- Add the ShelterPro full-coverage rain fly (+8 oz over the standard fly) and you can pitch for genuine storm mode.
- Full all-weather build with both upgrades: 3 lb 12 oz.

The dirtiest tradeoff in the ultralight hammock world is what to do about cold weather. An underquilt is heavier than a sleeping pad but does not need a fly. A sleeping pad is lighter but only insulates through direct contact and often shifts around at night.

- Ultralight down underquilt (20°F rated, 800-fp down): 22-26 oz.
- Ultralight synthetic underquilt (20°F rated): 26-32 oz.

Rough weight comparisons for real winter use (below 25°F):
- Winter underquilt (0°F rated, 900-fp down): 32-38 oz.

So a sleeping pad is roughly 8-12 oz lighter than the equivalent underquilt at any given warmth rating. For strict ultralight builds targeting sub-3 lb total system, a pad is often the right call. Ultralight trip planning: when the weight matters
Every ounce shed from a hammock system is an ounce carried across every mile of the trip. That math punches hard on a 2,000-mile thru-hike and barely at all on an overnighter. Rough guidelines from my own thru-hiking friends:
- Sub-3 mile total trip: Weight difference between a 3 lb and 5 lb hammock is imperceptible. Take whatever is most comfortable.
- 10-30 mile weekend trip: Weight starts to matter but comfort still wins. The V.3 in all-weather config (3 lb 12 oz) is a fine choice.
- 50-200 mile section hike: Every ounce is felt. Ultralight configuration matters. Sub-3 lb systems have a real advantage.

Before you spend $500-$1,500 on a "ultralight" hammock tent, run every spec through this checklist:
- Is the quoted weight "trail weight" or "packed weight"? Trail weight includes everything you need on trail. Packed weight sometimes excludes fly, bug net, straps, or the carrying bag. If a brand quotes packed weight without breaking down what is excluded, ask.
- What is the fabric denier? 40D ripstop is durable enough for bushwhack use. 30D silnylon is fine on-trail but starts to punch through on brush. 20D or DCF/Dyneema is race-fabric — light but easy to damage.
- Is the bug net integrated or an add-on? An "ultralight" hammock system where the bug net is a separate $80 add-on is not truly ultralight unless you're planning to skip bug season entirely.
- What is the fly coverage rating? A minimalist tarp of 8 x 10 ft is fine in dry weather but underspecified for storms. Full 6-tie-out coverage is 4-8 oz heavier and worth every ounce in bad weather.
- What is the actual capacity rating? Some sub-3 lb systems are rated for 200 lb only. If you're a bigger camper or bring gear into the hammock, you may need a heavier-rated system.
- Do you need to buy add-ons to make it functional? If the answer is "yes, plus a $300 tarp and a $150 bug net," the ultralight claim is on the individual hammock body only, not the system.
- What is the real-world review consensus? Look at long-distance thru-hiker reviews (not first-impressions unboxing videos). Actual miles reveal actual weaknesses.
Bottom line
The word "ultralight" is diluted, but the goal it points at (a working hammock shelter under 3 lb) is real and worth pursuing if the trip demands it. Getting there honestly means either accepting some sacrifice (bug net add-on, minimalist tarp, thinner fabric) or accepting that "ultralight-ish" at 3-3.5 lb is a better real-world compromise than strict sub-3 lb kit that needs multiple add-ons to actually function.
